Since ever in ancient times security seals have been used on papers, documents and boxes in order to show to the consignee if someone had tried to tamper with them.

The oldest kind of seal worked in adherence with the good they had to protect, as for example sealing clays

(the seal on Tutankhmaon's tomb )…

… later on sealing-waxes (used by templars) kept together with a wire or with a lace the different parts of the container. The authenticity of the seal derived from the logo of the consignor impressed in the plastic material. The consignne received the expedition only if he coul recognize the crest as authentic.

Today this way of sealing is used to protect low-value goods

 ( as for example a vase of marmalade ): the cover is bound to the glass vase by a piece of paper with the producer's logo.

This method is still used by Authorities to avoid access into places where a crime occurred.

After that lead seals were used, because this material is very soft and therefore is simple to impress on it the name of origin.

At their final destination, security seals were recognised as authentic only after having verified the logo.
